Getting to South Uist and Howmore

By car there are two direct routes to South Uist using ferry services provided by Caledonian MacBrayne:

1.  From Oban to Lochboisdale on South Uist.  The journey takes about 5½ hours and at present the ferry is scheduled to leave Oban on Saturdays at 0830 (check 2011 summer timetable at www.calmac.co.uk ).  The drive time from Glasgow to Oban is about 2½ hours.  Lochboisdale to Howmore takes about 20-25 minutes.

2.  From Uig on the north west coast of Skye to Lochmaddy on North Uist.  The journey takes about 1¾ hours and at present the ferry is scheduled to leave Uig on Saturdays at 1400.  The drive time from Glasgow to Uig is about 4½  hours.  Lochmaddy to Howmore takes about 50-55 minutes.

(The return ferries from the times shown provide suitable return journeys at the end of your stay.  There is an alternative early Saturday morning Lochmaddy – Uig service which leaves Lochmaddy at 0730 arriving Uig at 0915)

You are strongly advised to book your ferry crossings as soon as you can.  Many ferry services in the summer months, particularly on Saturdays, are fully booked.
 
Flybe have regular flights from Glasgow to Balivanich airport on Benbecula (www.flybe.com) with around thwo services per day.  It is also possible to fly to Ballivanich on Benbecula from Inverness via Stornoway
